RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning film industry recorded significant growth in the year 2024.

The Saudi Film Authority stated that last year, 13 films screened in 65 cinemas in the kingdom generating 72 million riyals in revenue.

Cinemas are now operational in 21 cities across the kingdom, showcasing a diverse range of films. According to a report by Al-Eqtisadiya, the most popular genres among audiences were realistic dramas and comedies, though fantasy and crime-based films also garnered attention.

Leading the box office was Mandoob Al-Layl (Representative of the Night), earned 28.255 million riyals. The film explores the struggles of a 30-year-old delivery worker navigating night shifts on the streets of Riyadh.

Second place went to the comedy Shabab Al-Bomb, which sold 632,300 tickets and earned 26.592 million riyals in revenue. The film, particularly popular with younger audiences, was a standout hit in the comedy genre.

The third most popular film was ‘Lail wa Nahar’ (Night and Day), a comedy that generated 2.6 million riyals.

While the film underperformed relative to its production costs, it is expected to reach a wider audience in 2025 with additional screenings planned.
