Ahead of the release of her film “Emergency,” Bollywood actor and BJP MP from Himachal’s Mandi, Kangana Ranaut, has sought police protection after receiving death threats on social media. The film, in which Kangana portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is set to be released in theatres on September 6.
The threats emerged after a video surfaced on social media showing a man issuing violent warnings to the actress. In the video, the man can be heard saying, “If you release this film, Sardar will hit you with slippers. I’m a very proud Indian. If I spot you anywhere in my country and in my Maharashtra, I’m saying this, not just as a Sikh and a proud Marathi, but all my Hindu, Christian, and Muslim brothers will also welcome you with slippers.”
Kangana, sharing the video on her official X handle, tagged the police departments of Himachal, Maharashtra, and Punjab, urging them to “please look into this.”
Another individual in the video warned, “If they portray Sikhs as terrorists in the film, remember what happened to the one she is portraying. Remember who Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were. If we can sacrifice our heads, we can also cut off heads.”

The video has sparked concern among social media users, many of whom are worried for Kangana’s safety. One user wrote, “What is happening in our nation? People are openly threatening the life of BJP MP and Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut simply for portraying India’s history. Is it wrong to tell the story of the Iron Lady of India, one of the country’s strongest Prime Ministers? Please, increase your security. We’re genuinely concerned for your safety.”
Emergency
In addition to playing the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Kangana has also directed “Emergency.” The film, which also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Shreyas Talpade, is set to be released on September 6, 2024.
