Indian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, has arrived in Pakistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, marking the first visit by an Indian foreign minister in nearly a decade.

The visit highlights a significant diplomatic moment, with both countries participating in multilateral discussions amid regional tensions.

The federal capital of Pakistan is fully prepared to host the 23rd meeting of the SCO’s Council of Heads of Government (CHG). Stringent security and logistical arrangements are in place to ensure the event proceeds without interruptions, as dignitaries from eight member states, including Russia, China, Iran, and Central Asian nations, have arrived for the high-level meeting.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will chair the summit, during which Pakistan will assume the rotating chairmanship of the SCO CHG for the next year, following India’s relinquishment after a 17-month tenure. The summit, which is being held in Islamabad, is expected to foster discussions on regional security, economic cooperation, and mutual development initiatives.

Jaishankar’s arrival was met with a formal welcome by Pakistani officials, signifying the importance of his visit. This was part of a broader reception for foreign dignitaries, with Islamabad International Airport bustling as representatives from SCO member states arrived.

The city was decked out with colorful lights, flags, and floral decorations, creating a vibrant atmosphere to greet the summit participants. Children in traditional attire presented bouquets to the arriving dignitaries, enhancing the celebratory mood.

On Monday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally welcomed Chinese Premier Li Qiang, who arrived ahead of the three-day event. The summit is expected to strengthen regional ties, especially amid ongoing geopolitical challenges.
