The government is finalizing a subsidy plan for millions of lifeline electricity consumers, which will be administered through the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), reported Business Recorder.

The proposal will soon be presented to the Federal Cabinet for approval. The Power Division, working with the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), has proposed a new Electricity Subsidy Program.

BISP will assist the Power Division in identifying and reaching eligible families for the subsidy. In collaboration with the Power Division, BISP is finalizing the eligibility criteria to identify potential beneficiaries for the electricity subsidy program.

The Power Division will determine the total number of subsidies to be allocated, while BISP will screen its database to identify families with electric connections, selecting those up to a specified cut-off score. BISP will also register additional families not yet included in the database.

BISP will use its National Socio Economic Registry (NSER) database to find families who qualify based on set criteria and share this information with the Power Division. They will also provide APIs for data integration.

Families not in the NSER database will be registered through 647 Dynamic Registration Centres (DRCs) across Pakistan.

When the Power Division receives the data from BISP, it will send SMS notifications to the eligible families about their subsidy. To claim the subsidy, consumers will visit a bank with their bill.

They will undergo biometric verification to confirm their identity. Once verified, the bank will process the payment and apply the subsidy.
