Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has approved the ‘Punjab Honahar Merit Scholarship’ Program, significantly expanding its reach.

In a meeting focused on education reforms, the Chief Minister announced the increase of scholarships from 4,000 to 25,000.

The Chief Minister stated that the scholarship would cover the full tuition fees for students pursuing a BS degree from both government and eight selected private universities. Additionally, approval was given for the establishment of new universities in Jhelum, Vehari, and Rahim Yar Khan.

Maryam Nawaz also directed the immediate commencement of the laptop scheme and expressed satisfaction over the provision of free MDCAT and ECAT classes in 90 colleges across Punjab. The meeting decided to introduce new disciplines in colleges with low student numbers, aligning them with job market needs.

An online portal system for the appointment of Divisional Directors and Principals was also approved, aiming to ensure a merit-based selection process. Furthermore, a plan to provide new buses to government colleges was presented on the Chief Minister’s instructions.

The meeting reviewed recommendations for establishing universities under public-private partnerships and agreed to facilitate the private sector in setting up universities. A high-level ministry committee will be established to oversee the affairs of private universities.
