The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has intensified its crackdown on food safety violations, targeting food outlets along the motorways. As part of an extensive inspection campaign, the PFA sealed five well-known restaurants and imposed fines totaling Rs2.57 million on 132 food outlets.
The PFA, acting on the directives of Director General Asim Javed, inspected 884 food outlets in various motorway service areas. A spokesperson for the authority revealed that one legal case was registered, and 682 outlets were served notices to improve hygiene and food safety standards.
During the inspections, food safety teams confiscated one maund of substandard used oil and over seven maunds of expired snacks and beverages. Expired cold drinks, snacks, and other confectionery items were found on shelves, posing a health risk to consumers. The lack of proper documentation and food safety records at many of these outlets also raised concerns.
DG PFA Asim Javed emphasised the importance of regular inspections to ensure safe and quality food is available to the public. He stated that strict measures would continue to be enforced against outlets violating food safety regulations, aiming to uphold public health and safety standards across the province.
