Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari announced on Wednesday that the government is committed to reducing electricity costs by Rs. 10 to 12 per unit within the next 18 months. He made these remarks while speaking to the media after participating in the Power Reforms Roundtable at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA).

Leghari emphasized several key reforms essential for achieving this target, including re-profiling loans associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), reviewing contracts with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), addressing transmission constraints, enhancing the efficiency of distribution companies, and expanding the tax base.

Regarding the forensic audit of IPPs, the minister stated it would be conducted if necessary but expressed optimism that such a measure would not be required.

In his keynote address, Leghari revealed plans to privatize seven out of ten power distribution companies in the near future. He also pointed out that the current solar net metering system primarily benefits higher-income groups.

Highlighting Pakistan’s achievements, the minister stated that the country ranks as the cleanest energy producer in the region, encouraging all citizens to take pride in this accomplishment.
