Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut delighted fans with the trailer for her highly anticipated film Emergency. Released on August 14, the trailer features a star-studded cast including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudry, Vishak Nair, and Milind Soman, with Ranaut portraying the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

The trailer offers a glimpse into what it describes as “the darkest times of democratic India,” highlighting key moments from Gandhi’s life, including her relationship with her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, her political rise, and the challenges she faced during her tenure. It also touches on the portrayal of Gandhi’s life as a “Shakespearean tragedy.”

Regarding the film’s release, Kangana announced a new date after a postponement due to her election campaign. Following her victory in the Lok Sabha elections for Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, she confirmed that Emergency will hit theaters worldwide on September 6, 2024.

Emergency is directed by Kangana Ranaut and features Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik in significant roles.

Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, the film is set during one of India’s most turbulent political eras and aims to present a detailed portrayal of historical events. The screenplay and dialogues are penned by Ritesh Shah, with music by Sanchit Balhara.

In a statement, Kangana described the film as inspired by William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, reflecting on the consequences of unchecked ambition.

She stated, “The essence of Emergency is the destruction wrought when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints. It is undoubtedly the most sensational chapter of Indian democracy, and I am eagerly awaiting its worldwide release on September 6, 2024.”

In a recent interview with Variety, Kangana likened Indira Gandhi’s life to a Shakespearean tragedy, underscoring the film’s honest take on the Emergency period, its causes, and its aftermath.
