Dwayne Bravo retires from all formats of cricket

Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket following an injury that cut short his final Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season. Bravo, who had already retired from international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), bid farewell to the sport at the age of 40, marking the end of a 21-year professional career.

In an emotional Instagram post, Bravo expressed his gratitude for the game, sharing, “From the age of five, I knew this was what I wanted to do… I dedicated my entire life to you, and in return, you gave me the life I dreamed of.” He added that despite his desire to continue, his body could no longer withstand the physical demands of the game.

Dwayne Bravo suffered a back injury while playing for the Trinbago Knight Riders against St. Lucia, which led to his premature exit from the tournament.

Record-breaking career and future endeavors

Since making his debut in 2006, Bravo has become one of the most successful bowlers in T20 cricket. Across 582 matches, he claimed 631 wickets, a record for the format. In the CPL, Bravo played 107 matches, scoring 1,155 runs at an average of 20.62 with a strike rate of 129.33, and took 129 wickets with an average of 23.02.

Reflecting on his career, Bravo wrote, “It’s been an incredible journey, filled with many highs and a few lows… My mind wants to keep going, but my body can no longer endure the pain, the breakdowns, and the strain.”

In his farewell message, Bravo also thanked his fans, particularly those in Trinidad & Tobago, for their unwavering support, stating, “Though this ending is bittersweet, I have no regrets about my career or this decision. Now, I look forward to my next chapter.”

Recently, Bravo has been involved with Chennai Super Kings as a player and has taken on the role of bowling consultant for Afghanistan’s team in preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup, set to take place in the West Indies and USA.
