China has introduced the world’s largest earthquake early warning system, called the National Earthquake Intensity Rapid Reporting and Early Warning Project.

The new system features around 15,899 monitoring stations across China, covering areas prone to earthquakes.

It can issue alerts within seconds of detecting seismic activity, allowing people to take safety measures before the more damaging aftershocks hit. Initiated in 2018, the project has now become fully operational after successfully completing its construction and acceptance tests.

The system’s capability to deliver alerts within seven seconds in critical zones and between 10 to 30 seconds in other areas marks a major advancement from earlier methods, which took several minutes to report earthquakes.

The network is capable of detecting earthquakes as minor as magnitude 2.0 in eastern regions and even smaller tremors in densely populated areas such as Beijing and the Yangtze River Delta.
