KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has reduced electricity prices for K-Electric consumers under the September 2024 monthly adjustment.
Nepra issued a notification in this regard, stating that 18 paisas per unit reduction will be reflected in the electricity bills for December 2024. The development came after K-Electric requested a reduction of 16 paisas per unit for the September adjustment.
According to the notification, the reduction will not apply to consumers who use up to 300 units of electricity per month.
Additionally, the utility company had sought permission to return Rs 247 million to its consumers as part of this adjustment. The fuel cost adjustment (FCA) mechanism allows utilities to adjust tariffs based on changes in fuel costs, with increases or reductions passed on to consumers accordingly.
Earlier, the federal government announced a three-month winter relief package for electricity consumers after the approval of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet.
According to the statement released by the Finance Division, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the ECC meeting, where several key agenda items were discussed and decisions were made.
“The ECC considered the proposal submitted by the Ministry of Energy (Power Division) regarding a winter demand initiative for the industrial, domestic (ToU and non-ToU consumers exceeding 200 units), commercial, and general services consumers of Discos and K-Electric to enable optimum use of system generation capacity besides reducing gas demand due to shifting of favorable demand towards electricity.”
