The Sindh High Court has sought a report on companies selling water through bottles and has indicated the formation of a commission to inspect these companies.

According to Dawn News, a hearing took place regarding a petition concerning companies selling bottled water.

During the hearing, the court inquired about the number of registered companies selling water in bottles. In response, the Assistant Director Legal of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control requested that all relevant records be presented to the court at the next hearing.

Moreover, the court remarked that plastic bottles are left out in intense heat and questioned how safe water in these plastic bottles is.

Advocate Dr. Shahab Imam highlighted that microplastics are a severe issue, contributing to an increase in cancer cases, yet companies are not held accountable for selling water after the expiry date of plastic bottles.

The court appointed Dr. Shahab Imam Advocate and Mohammad Wada Advocate as court assistants and directed that samples be obtained from each district’s Deputy Commissioner and tested at the Aga Khan Laboratory.

Advocate Mohammad Wada suggested that it would be better to engage an independent organisation for sample collection.

The court indicated that a commission would be established to inspect bottled water and summoned the Secretary of Health and others to appear in person at the next hearing.

The court also ordered that the Chief Secretary of Sindh be summoned for judicial assistance at the next hearing and instructed him to assist in the formation of the commission for the bottled water issue.

The court adjourned the hearing of the petition until August 27.
