Initial reports suggested the Federal Ministry of Interior had rejected Punjab’s request to suspend social media during Ashura. However, the ministry clarified on Friday night that no decision had been made yet.
A ministry spokesperson stated that “requests have been received from the provinces, but no decision has been made.”
The Punjab Government had requested the suspension of social media from the 6th to the 11th of Muharram.

On Friday, media outlets reported that the ministry had denied this request, stating that mobile networks would only be suspended around procession areas.
Later, the Ministry of Interior denied these reports, stating that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif would make the final decision.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari added that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had not yet approved the proposal and would make the final decision herself.
