YouTube has unveiled a new feature called “Communities” that allows creators and fans to engage directly on the platform. The feature, announced at the Made on YouTube event in New York, aims to foster stronger connections by providing creators and fans with a dedicated space to share posts, photos, and comments.
The launch marks YouTube’s entry into community-building tools, similar to those offered by platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, but integrated directly into the YouTube experience. Creators will now have more control over interactions on their Community pages, and subscribers can initiate posts and participate in discussions without leaving the platform.
Fostering fan-creator connections
The new Communities feature, distinct from YouTube’s existing “Community Posts” tool, is designed to allow deeper, real-time conversations. While Community Posts focus on promoting videos and updates, Communities will offer a space for direct communication between creators and fans.

In a blog post, YouTube explained, “We wanted to build a space where, for the first time ever, subscribers can chat with each other and the creator directly.” The platform has worked closely with creators and their fans to develop the feature, addressing their desire for more meaningful interactions, the sense of belonging, and enhanced control over their online communities.
Successful communities in action
Several early adopters of the Communities feature, such as fitness creator Sydney Cummings Houdyshell, cooking channel Bake With Shivesh, and gaming channel Mogswamp, have reported positive results. These creators have seen their fans share fitness progress, try new recipes, and engage in gaming challenges, creating lasting connections within their communities.
Though the feature is still in its experimental phase, YouTube plans to expand its rollout gradually. More creators will gain access to the Communities tool throughout 2024, with broader availability expected by early 2025.
