Temple stampede kills 6 in southern India

TIRUPAT:  A stampede at a temple in southern India killed at least six people and injured several others.

As per reports, the incident occurred in the Tirupati temple stampede in southern India on late Wednesday.

According to the Indian media, devotees from across India had gathered for a 10-day festival at the Sri Venkateswara temple in the city of Tirupati in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The stampede began the moment authorities opened the gates, the head of the temple said.

The police said that the incident occurred when police authorities opened a gate to bring the unwell woman outside. Hundreds of devotees waiting to collect tokens, thinking that the gate had opened for tokens, tried to exit, leading to the stampede.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu has summoned a review meeting today after six people were killed in the Tirupati stampede.

According to a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) spokesperson, the CM will also meet with the families of the deceased later in the day.

“Pained by the stampede in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief in a post shared on X.
