A small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the Georgia airport, killing at least two persons.
Police responded at the Covington Municipal Airport in Newton County around 11:21pm ET Saturday.
The Federal Aviation Administration contacted local authorities after losing communication with the Rockwell Commander aircraft after takeoff at 11pm.
“Officers arrived to the Covington Municipal Airport at approximately 11:21pm after receiving a call from the FAA regarding a single engine aircraft that had taken off at approximately 11:00pm,” the Covington Police Department stated.
There was no more communication from the aircraft after takeoff. Officers found the aircraft in the bushes just north of the runway.
Two people were found with the aircraft and pronounced deceased at the site.
The FAA is investigating the tragedy with the National Transportation Safety Board and confirmed the aircraft was a Rockwell Commander.
No information about the victims’ names has been revealed.

The crash follows a series of aviation mishaps in the US, including one of the deadliest in recent history.
On January 29, an American Airlines passenger flight crashed with a military helicopter over Reagan National Airport, killing 67 passengers.
