Rebecca Cheptegei, the 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner who competed in the recent Paris Olympics, has tragically died after being set on fire by ex boyfriend.
Cheptegei, who had sustained severe burns from the attack on Sunday, passed away early this morning due to multi-organ failure.
The incident occurred in north-west Kenya, where Cheptegei lived and trained. Authorities reported that she was attacked after returning from church with her daughters.
Additionally, her father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed deep sorrow, describing his daughter as a “very supportive” family member. Fellow athlete James Kirwa remembered her generosity and support towards other runners.

A local administrator indicated that the attack might be linked to a dispute over land between Cheptegei and her ex-partner. An investigation is ongoing, and police are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Moreover, Kenya’s Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen highlighted the case as a grim reminder of the urgent need to address gender-based violence. This tragic event highlights the growing concern over attacks on women in Kenya.
Cheptegei’s father has called for justice and expressed worry about the future of her two children. Dr. Kimani Mbugua from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed that Cheptegei’s extensive burns led to her death despite medical efforts.
In addition, the Uganda Athletics Federation condemned the violence and called for justice. British Olympian Eilish McColgan also expressed her heartbreak, noting that this incident is part of a troubling pattern affecting female athletes.
