Social media is flooded with news of a new virus in China five year after Covid-19.

Although social media is filled with claims of overcrowded hospitals, no official reports suggest that the situation is critical. However, the China’s National Disease Control and Prevention Administration (NCDPA) acknowledged a notable rise in respiratory infections between December 16 and 22.

A statement from the NCDPA released recently revealed that respiratory infections had risen significantly in the week of December 16 to 22.

Earlier, China’s diseases control authority said that it was piloting a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin, with cases of some respiratory diseases expected to rise through the winter.

Probably more than 20 million. The WHO has said member countries reported more than seven million deaths from COVID-19, but the true death toll is estimated to be at least three times higher.

About the virus

According to reports, China is witnessing an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

HMPV causes flu-like symptoms. The virus usually affects the upper respiratory system but can sometimes cause lower respiratory infections. HMPV is more common in winter and early spring.

The virus is particularly concerning for vulnerable groups in China, including young children and the elderly.

HMPV symptoms are similar to those of flu or common cold. It can spread from an infected individual to others through coughing, sneezing or personal contact.
