Los Angeles wildfire: Death toll reaches 16

Six simultaneous blazes that have ripped across Los Angeles County neighbourhoods since Tuesday have killed at least 16 people.

About 35,000 homes and businesses are without electricity.

At least 13 people are estimated to be missing so far. The death toll is expected to mount when firefighters are able to conduct house-to-house searches.

Evacuation orders for the largest blaze, the Palisades Fire, have expanded as it sweeps east and threatens Brentwood and Encino. It is 11 per cent contained.

11 deaths out of 16 have been confirmed in the Eaton fire and another five in the Palisades fire.

As of Saturday, more than 153,000 people were under evacuation orders in Los Angeles County, according to local authorities. Another 166,000 were under evacuation warnings.

Cause of Los Angeles wildfire

California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for an independent investigation into the loss of water pressure to hydrants and why the Santa Ynez Reservoir was closed for maintenance and empty when the fire broke out.

The official cause of the deadly Los Angeles wildfires, fuelled by powerful winds and drought-like conditions, is yet to be determined.

Neighbouring countries Canada and Mexico, Texas and states: New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and Washington have all sent firefighters to Los Angeles as part of the emergency relief effort.

Paris Hilton, Bella Hadid, Billy Crystal, Adam Brody, Milo Ventimiglia, Anthony Hopkins, and others are among the Hollywood celebrities who have lost their homes.
