Ten days following the United States’ military plane deportation of 104 illegal Indian immigrants, 119 more illegal immigrants, the second group under the present US government, landed in Amritsar on Saturday night.
Including two juveniles and four women, most of the deportees fall between the ages of 18-30.
Third batch of additional 157 deportees is likely to arrive in Amritsar on Sunday night, according Indian media.
Images and videos released earlier this month showed Indian immigrants being deported being chained and locked up on US military planes. These made a lot of people angry. The Indian Opposition said that the government should have sent its own plane to bring the people back in a proper way.
S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, informed Parliament that the US’s regular operating policy included the usage of restrictions on the deportees. He reassured the Opposition that India was working with the Trump government to guarantee that returned deportees were not mistreated in any way.
Modi about Indian immigrants
On Thursday, during a joint press conference with Trump at the White House, Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi said that India is “fully prepared” to take back any verified Indian who was in the US illegally.
He said this issue is not limited to India alone, and the “bigger fight” is on ending this “ecosystem” which is involved in “human-trafficking”.
