WEBDESK: An emergency has been declared in several states of the United States (US) due to severe snowfall that has caused widespread disruption, affecting nearly 60 million people across the country. Roads in cities like Ohio and Indiana have been blanketed with several inches of snow.
According to British media, the states where emergencies have been declared include Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, and New York. In these seven states, educational institutions have been closed, and several airports have either suspended flights or experienced significant delays. Due to the snowstorm, schools in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia had already been closed.
The US National Weather Service predicts up to 15 inches of snow in some areas, marking a record snowfall for the past decade.
The temperatures dropping well below freezing in many states. Some regions have experienced temperatures as low as minus 29 degrees Celsius.
In Canada, the temperature is expected to plunge to minus 40 degrees Celsius in the province of Manitoba.
The heavy snowfall has made travel extremely difficult, with rates of up to five inches per hour in the state of Utah. The snow has caused landslides, and people are facing difficulties as several vehicles are buried under thick layers of snow.
Across the US, nearly 60 million people have been advised to stay cautious due to the severe weather conditions.
