WASHINGTON: The outgoing US President Joe Biden said on Monday that United States and its allies “can’t walk away” from Ukraine. His remarks came as he prepared to hand over power to Donald Trump next week.

Biden hailed the international effort to back Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion. He said Russian President Vladimir Putin had “failed to achieve any of his strategic objectives.” However, he cautioned, “There is more to do. We can’t walk away.”

Speaking at the State Department, Biden criticized Russia, China, and Iran. He urged Western nations to stay united in support of Kyiv.

He contrasted his presidency with Trump’s, emphasizing his work to rebuild international alliances. “The United States is winning the worldwide competition compared to four years ago,” Biden said.

Biden claimed America’s alliances are at their strongest in decades. He praised NATO partners for meeting defense spending commitments. “Our alliances are stronger. Our adversaries and competitors are weaker,” he stated.

Implicit Criticism of Trump

Biden’s comments indirectly targeted Trump, who has often criticized NATO countries. Trump once suggested he might allow Russia to act aggressively toward allies not meeting financial obligations.
