Sardar Akhtar Mengal, leader of the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), has raised serious concerns about the proposed constitutional amendments’ lack of transparency.

Speaking to the media, Mengal questioned why these amendments are being treated as a secret document and kept from public scrutiny.

Mengal highlighted the irregularity in the process, noting that the draft of the proposed amendments is being shared “in bits and pieces” rather than in a comprehensive format. “There would be no example of such democracy,” he remarked, criticizing the fragmented and secretive approach.

He further questioned the urgency behind the push to pass the amendments swiftly, asking, “What emergency necessitates a secret amendment in the constitution overnight?” Mengal suggested that the rulers are ashamed to make these changes public, indicating a lack of confidence in their content.

Lack of inclusion and transparency

The BNP-M leader highlighted that his party has not participated in the drafting or approval process of these amendments and will not do so in the future. “We didn’t become part of such amendments, nor will we become a participant now,” Mengal firmly stated.

Mengal also revealed that he was abroad when contacted by political figures to support the passage of the amendments. His response was blunt: “I told them, I am jobless,” signaling his refusal to back what he views as a non-transparent process.

Allegations of intimidation

Mengal raised a further alarming issue, claiming that two Senate members from his party have been intimidated over the phone regarding their stance on the amendments.

These allegations underscore the tense atmosphere surrounding the constitutional amendment process.

The BNP-M leader’s statements reflect a broader concern over the lack of democratic principles in the handling of the proposed changes and raise questions about the motivations behind the secrecy.
