Who is Punjab’s next governor?

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, has finalised the name of his party leader, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, for the esteemed position of Punjab Governor.

This development was officially confirmed by Saleem himself and according to reports, he is likely to become Punjab’s next governor.

If appointed, Saleem is poised to succeed the incumbent Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman, a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader who took office in May 2023.

Prior to this announcement, PPP had reportedly considered several senior leaders, including Qamar Zaman Kaira, Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, and Chaudhry Riaz, for Punjab Governorship.

Simultaneously, there are indications that another PPP leader, Faisal Karim Kundi, may assume the role of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Governor.

Background of Sardar Saleem Haider:

In the 2008 general elections, Saleeem was elected to the National Assembly. He then joined former Prime Minister (PM) Yusuf Raza Gilani’s federal cabinet as Minister of State for Defence Production, a role he held until 2011. Subsequently, he served as Minister of State for Defence under former PM Raja Pervez Ashraf until 2013.

In the 2013 elections, Saleem again contested for the National Assembly as a PPP candidate but was unsuccessful.

During the previous government of PML-N, the PPP leader also served as a Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis.
