Bruun’s will required his 20,000-coin collection remain secret for a hundred years before auctioning. Now, a century later, Stack’s Bowers will unveil “the most valuable collection of world coins ever.” The auction series begins this autumn, showcasing the collection over multiple years for numismatic enthusiasts.
A Diverse Collection
Bruun’s wealth allowed him to gather coins, medals, tokens, and banknotes from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Additionally, his will required that, in a calamity, his collection safeguard the royal coin and medal collection in Copenhagen.
Auction Highlights
The collection, stored in Denmark’s National Bank, is now ready to dazzle collectors. Vicken Yegparian, Stack’s Bowers’ vice president of numismatics, praised it as “the best open secret ever.”
Estimated Value
Valuations suggest the collection could bring £57.4 million, with individual pieces ranging from £40 to £800,000. Denmark’s National Museum secured seven rare coins valued at over £877,000.
Historical Significance
Senior researcher Helle Horsnaes, an expert at the National Museum, described the collection as a legendary tale akin to a fairytale. The mystique surrounding the collection, dormant for a century, is finally set to captivate the world.
