LAHORE: Wearing face masks has been made mandatory in Lahore and three other divisions of Punjab due to hazardous air pollution and smog.

According to a notification issued by the Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Imran Hamid Sheikh, wearing masks has been made mandatory in Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala until January 31, 2025.

The notification read that the decision had been made due to an increase in respiratory diseases in the smog-affected areas.

The Punjab government has decided to educational institutions in some divisions of Punjab, including Lahore due to among situation in Punjab.

Earlier on Tuesday, The government of Punjab established a “Smog War Room” at the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters in Lahore, where focal persons from eight relevant departments will brief the EPA director general and other officers daily regarding their measures to curb smog.

The Smog War Room will also evaluate the performance of the smog mitigation activities. The daily advisory will be prepared by the charge of the Smog War Room and the same will be issued with the approval of the EPA DG.
