Veteran actress and Indian politician Jaya Bachchan recently voiced strong displeasure in the Rajya Sabha after being addressed by her husband’s name, Amitabh Bachchan.

During a parliamentary session, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh addressed her as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan Ji,” prompting an immediate reaction from Jaya Bachchan.

In response, Jaya sharply corrected the deputy chairman, stating, “Just saying Jaya Bachchan would have been enough.”

She expressed frustration over the practice of referring to women by their husband’s name, criticizing it as a reflection of a lack of personal identity and achievements. “This is a completely new phenomenon,” she said, highlighting her belief that women should be recognized for their own merits.

The video of her response quickly went viral, generating a range of reactions online. Some netizens questioned the inconsistency of her stance, noting that her name is officially registered with her husband’s surname.

One user remarked, “I don’t know much Hindi, but is she saying she doesn’t want to be called by her husband’s name but still wants her husband’s family name in the official form? Hypocrites.”

Conversely, many praised Bachchan for her bold stand against this tradition, with comments like, “Strong lady, you don’t need a title in front of your name. You are what you are,” and “Bahut sahi kaha Jaya mam ne” (Well said, Jaya Ma’am).
