WEB DESK: A Dutch man, Ivan Schalk, has realised his lifelong dream of constructing the world’s longest bicycle, measuring an impressive 180 feet and 11 inches. The ambitious project, which Schalk had envisioned since childhood after encountering the record in a Guinness World Records book, became a reality with the help of a dedicated team from Prinsenbeek.

Schalk, 39, who has a background in building carnival floats, enlisted the expertise of local residents including Joost Sweep, Jimmy Vermeeren, Sander Vissers, Bas Zuidema, Steffie van de Riet, Daan Husson, Toine Kleemans, and Jasper Korving, forming the team “Op De Beek Hebben We De Langste.”

“Prinsenbeek is known for its volunteers and high technical employability,” Schalk remarked. “We have the technical knowledge and want to apply this knowledge to the maximum.”

The COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges, causing delays in the project’s timeline. However, the team persevered and successfully broke records by riding the 180-foot, 11-inch bicycle for 100 meters. They also achieved the record for the world’s longest tandem bicycle by integrating additional pedals and team members.

Safety was a top priority throughout the endeavor, with Schalk ensuring that cyclists remained inside the structure for protection.

Following their groundbreaking achievement, the monumental bicycle will be permanently displayed at the local history museum in Prinsenbeek, celebrating not only Schalk’s personal milestone but also a significant accomplishment for the community.
