Israeli officials reportedly requested that its President Herzog’s aircraft go through Turkish airspace on its way to the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference. But Turkish officials turned down the request.
The climate conference is currently taking place in Baku.
The office of Israeli President Isaac Herzog declared on Saturday that he will not be attending the climate summit as scheduled.
The president’s administration gave the vague explanation of “security considerations” as the cause.
According to international media, Israel and Turkey engaged in “intense negotiations through diplomatic channels that lasted for several days but did not yield results.”
This comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that his country had cut all connections with Israel.
Erdogan announced that the government of the Republic of Turkey, under Erdogan, will not continue to maintain or deepen its ties with Israel.
“We will continue to maintain our stance of severing ties with Israel, as our ruling coalition is resolute in its decision.”
Israel’s assaults on Gaza
In other events, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said that 29 people were killed in Israeli strikes across the nation on Saturday.
Israel has been committing genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing at least 43,846 Palestinians and injuring 103,740 more.
Israeli attacks in Lebanon since the start of the war on Gaza have killed at least 3,481 people and injured 14,786 more.
