Donald Trump and Kamala Harris delivered their final appeals to the voters, with polls reflecting one of the closest races in US history.
Americans are heading to the polls to choose between Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 race for the White House. According to the polls, Harris and Trump are deadlocked nationally and in Key swing states. Pollsters are saying that this might be the closest presidential race ever.
By Monday morning, the number of Americans who had already cast their votes stood at more than 78 million, according to the University of Florida’s Election Lab. Meanwhile, Harris and Trump staged their last day of campaigning by each running rallies in main swing states, thus proposing differing plans for the country’s future.
Harris came into the campaign at a later stage, when she secured the Democratic nomination after Joe Biden withdrew his candidacy in July after a difficult debate against President Trump where he seemed confused and stammered through his answers.
The U.S. presidential elections are determined by the Electoral College, a system that allows a candidate who loses the popular vote to win the election. Trump or Harris must receive 270 among the 538 electoral college to become the president. Each state apportions a certain number of votes based on its population.
