WEB DESK: TikTok has announced a significant leap forward in its capabilities as the tech race intensifies.

ByteDance-owned TikTok is targeting Google’s popular video application YouTube by offering users the ability to upload hour-long videos, according to information shared with TechCrunch.

Earlier this year, TikTok expanded its video length, allowing some users to upload half-hour clips. Most users currently can upload videos up to 10 minutes in length. The potential launch of 60-minute video uploads would eliminate the need for networks to break up episodes into multiple parts, TechCrunch reported.

Creators aiming to upload 20-minute-long videos need to buy a subscription. The move represents another step in TikTok’s evolution, which began with short, vertical videos. The platform has since expanded its features and audience, posing a significant challenge to other social media giants such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

TikTok has also been encouraging users to upload horizontal clips, with notifications about content boosts for such uploads sent out earlier this year. This shift is part of TikTok’s strategy to provide a more YouTube-like experience for its users.
