By Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail of the Supreme Court of Pakistan criticized the government’s inaction regarding alleged agency interference in judicial matters during a hearing on Tuesday. The remarks came as a six-member bench, led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, resumed the suo motu hearing on the Islamabad High Court judges’ letter accusing agencies of meddling in judicial affairs.
Six judges of the IHC had previously written to CJP Isa, requesting a judicial convention to address alleged intelligence agency interference in judicial functions. The SCBA submitted suggestions, emphasizing the judiciary’s independence and calling for inquiries into any interventions.
During the hearing, lawyers from various bar associations presented arguments, with the Pakistan Bar Council’s vice chairman highlighting the seriousness of the allegations and suggesting a judicial commission investigation. Justice Minallah noted the consensus on interference in judicial matters, while Justice Mandokhail lamented the government’s lack of action.

CJP Isa clarified the role of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and its separation from the Supreme Court, emphasizing that the court cannot direct the SJC. Justice Minallah observed that the issue indicated a recurring trend, referencing previous instances mentioned by the Attorney General for Pakistan.
