WhatsApp, is preparing to roll out a new feature that will allow users to tag or mention others in their Status updates, similar to Instagram Stories. The development is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to expand its Status functionality, according to tech website Gagadget.
Unlike Instagram, where mentions are visible to everyone, WhatsApp will enable users to privately mention and tag individuals in their Status updates. Those privately mentioned will also have the option to reshare the Status if they choose.
The new feature will cap mentions at five people per Status and is set to include a “like” feature, akin to Instagram’s heart button, though likes will remain private.

WhatsApp expands personalisation with new video call features
In addition to the Status update, WhatsApp has been testing other features to enhance user experience, including a redesigned typing indicator for both personal and group chats. Earlier this week, the platform announced the introduction of new filters and background options for video calls, allowing users to personalize their calls with ease.
“Conversations on WhatsApp should always feel fun and expressive,” the messaging app said in a blog post, explaining the intent behind the new filters.
The effects will enable users to change backgrounds during video calls, either for privacy or to create a more engaging atmosphere, transporting themselves to virtual environments like cozy coffee shops or serene living rooms.
