Musk informed investors that he expects Tesla’s robot, named Optimus, to start handling factory tasks by this year’s end.
Companies like Japan’s Honda and Hyundai Motor’s Boston Dynamics have been developing humanoid robots for years.
This year, a Microsoft and Nvidia-supported startup, Figure, announced a partnership with BMW to integrate humanoid robots in the automaker’s U.S. facilities.
Musk has previously stated that robot sales might eclipse other segments of Tesla’s business, including car manufacturing.
Musk believes Tesla leads in scaling humanoid robot production with advanced AI capabilities. However, he has a history of unmet promises, like his 2019 claim of launching a “robotaxi” network by 2020.
