DUBAI: US tech giant OpenAI introduced a ChatGPT tool called “Deep Research” ahead of key meetings in Tokyo. On Monday, rising competition from China’s DeepSeek chatbot was noted.

Generative AI was brought into the public spotlight by OpenAI in 2022 with ChatGPT. The company stated that its new tool “achieves in minutes what would take a human several hours.”

A livestreamed video announcement was made by OpenAI researchers. The tool’s ability to analyze web search data and recommend ski equipment for a winter vacation in Japan was demonstrated.

“Deep Research” was described as OpenAI’s next agent. A statement said that prompts can be given, and ChatGPT will find, analyze, and synthesize online sources to create reports at a research analyst’s level.

A meeting in Tokyo with Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was scheduled for OpenAI CEO Sam Altman later on Monday. Masayoshi Son, head of SoftBank, was also expected to attend.

Involvement in the Stargate initiative was confirmed for both SoftBank and OpenAI. This initiative was announced by former US President Donald Trump to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US.

A trip to Washington was planned for Ishiba later this week for his first in-person meeting with Trump.

A report by The Nikkei Business Daily stated that the initiative includes AI data centers and power plants. The scale of the required investment was not specified.

A statement was made by Altman to The Nikkei regarding AI-driven hardware development. A partnership with Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive was mentioned.

The development of a prototype was said to take several years, according to Altman.

DeepSeek was acknowledged by Altman as a strong model. However, he stated that its technology is not new.

Claims were made that DeepSeek has reverse-engineered leading US AI technologies, including ChatGPT.

A warning was issued last week by OpenAI. Concerns were raised about Chinese companies attempting to replicate its advanced AI models. Closer collaboration with US authorities was reported.
