WEB DESK: The government of Pakistan has decided to hire a consultant to assist with the licencing process of Starlink, the satellite internet service owned by US billionaire Elon Musk.

The development occurred on Tuesday during a meeting chaired by the Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja.

The meeting’s agenda included talking about ways to improve satellite connection and technology in Pakistan.

Representatives from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), and the Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board (PSARB) attended the meeting.

Along with Starlink’s licensing process, the meeting also discussed the development of a regulatory framework for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.

Earlier this month, Elon Musk hinted at launching his Starlink satellite internet service in Pakistan.

A Twitter user, named Sanam Jamali, while tagging Musk on ‘X,’ wrote, “With Starlink, Pakistan could leap into the future, where every citizen has the chance to connect and grow. Please, let Starlink be our bridge to tomorrow.”

Musk, while replying to Jamali, said that he is waiting for the Pakistan government’s approval.

Starlink has already been registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

What is Starlink?

“Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls, and more,” read the introduction of the company on its website.

“Leveraging advanced satellites and user hardware coupled with our deep experience with both spacecraft and on-orbit operations, Starlink delivers high-speed, low-latency internet to users all over the world,” it added.
