BTS member Suga, also known as Min Yoongi, has issued a heartfelt apology to his fans following a drunk driving incident involving an electric scooter. Currently serving in the South Korean military, Suga took to the social media platform Weverse on Wednesday morning to explain the events that led to the situation and express his remorse.
What happened to Suga?
According to Suga, the incident occurred after he had been drinking late at night. While returning home on his electric scooter, Suga violated traffic laws. As he attempted to park his scooter near his house, he fell. A nearby police officer conducted a breathalyzer test, which led to the revocation of his driver’s license and a fine.
In his note, Suga expressed deep regret, saying, “It is with a very heavy and apologetic heart that I have to come to you with such disappointment. After drinking at dinner last night, I rode home on an electric kickboard. I violated road traffic laws without realizing that I was not allowed to use an electric kickboard while drunk due to the simple thought that it was a short distance away.”
He continued, “While setting up my electric scooter at the front door of my house, I fell alone. A police officer was nearby, and as a result of a breathalyzer test, my license was revoked, and I was fined. Although no one was harmed or any facilities were damaged during this process, I bow my head in apology to everyone as it is my responsibility and there is no room for excuses.”
Suga concluded by apologizing to the BTS ARMY and promising to be more cautious in the future, stating, “I apologize to everyone who was hurt by my careless and wrong actions, and I will be more careful in my actions to avoid such incidents in the future.”
Response from BigHit music
BTS’s agency, BigHit Music, also issued a public apology regarding the incident. The statement read, “We apologize for the accident involving BTS member Suga’s electric scooter.”
The agency detailed the incident, noting that on the night of August 6, Suga was returning home after drinking alcohol. Despite wearing a helmet, he fell while parking his scooter after traveling about 500 meters.
Police officers who were nearby conducted a sobriety test, which resulted in Suga receiving a ticket and having his license revoked. The agency clarified that no personal injury or property damage occurred and that Suga was escorted home by the police.
BigHit Music added, “We apologize for the disappointment this artist’s inappropriate behavior caused many of you. As a social service worker, he will receive appropriate disciplinary action from his employer for his behavior. We will be more careful to prevent this from happening in the future.”
Investigation & potential legal consequences
The situation took a more serious turn when the Yongsan Police Station revealed that Suga’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was measured at 0.227%, nearly eight times the legal limit of 0.03% in South Korea. This significant discrepancy from Suga’s initial claim of consuming only one glass of beer could lead to harsher penalties.
According to an exclusive report by Donga Ilbo, the new evidence might result in fines of up to 20 million KRW (approximately $17,000 USD) or imprisonment for up to five years. The police are still deliberating on whether to suspend Suga’s license for a year.
While BigHit Music has yet to comment on these latest developments, the case continues to unfold, with potential legal consequences looming over the BTS star.
This incident has shocked many fans, as BTS members are known for their disciplined public personas. Suga’s admission and apology reflect the gravity of the situation, and his commitment to facing the consequences of his actions. The BTS ARMY and the public at large are awaiting further updates as the investigation progresses.
