The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed five prominent cricketing figures as mentors at high-performance academies across the country, with the goal of enhancing player development ahead of the Champions Cup.
The appointments are part of the PCB’s broader strategy to invest in long-term talent nurturing at various cricketing centres.
According to sources within the PCB, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed will head the Karachi academy, while veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has been assigned to Sialkot. Fast-bowling legend Waqar Younis will oversee operations at the Lahore academy. Meanwhile, Saqlain Mushtaq will take charge of the Multan academy, and former captain Misbah-ul-Haq will lead the Faisalabad academy.
Mentors to play year-round role in player development
The PCB has secured these high-profile mentors on lucrative contracts, ensuring their involvement is not limited to the Champions Cup but extends year-round. These mentors will contribute to a range of cricketing activities, offering their expertise in both training camps and domestic tournaments.
The appointments are part of the PCB’s ongoing efforts to elevate Pakistan’s domestic cricketing infrastructure and provide emerging players with access to seasoned professionals. Each mentor is expected to play a pivotal role in developing players, particularly those with potential for the national team.
This development follows the conclusion of the domestic Champions One-Day Cup, where Panthers claimed the title by defeating Markhors by five wickets in the final at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Sunday. The PCB is focused on maintaining the momentum of domestic cricket through these appointments, with the Champions Cup set to commence soon.
