Pakistan’s campaign in the 2024 SAFF Under-17 Championship ended in heartbreak as they were defeated by Bangladesh 8-7 in a dramatic penalty shootout during the semi-final on Friday. The match, held in Thimphu, Bhutan, saw seven South Asian nations competing for the regional title.

Pakistan appeared to be in control after taking a 2-0 lead. Mohammad Shahab Ahmed opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a stunning goal, followed by a penalty conversion by Abdur Rahman in the 62nd minute.

However, Bangladesh staged a remarkable comeback, with goals in the 74th and 94th minutes to equalise, sending the match into a tense penalty shootout.

Penalty shootout drama ends Pakistan’s hopes

In the shootout, both teams were neck-and-neck, tied at 7-7. Pakistan, however, missed their 8th penalty attempt, allowing Bangladesh to capitalise by converting their final kick and securing a place in the final.

Bangladesh will now face defending champions India, who booked their spot in the final after defeating Nepal in the second semi-final. The final is set to take place on Monday.
