The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced significant changes to its national selection committee, bringing in notable former cricketers and experts to bolster its ranks. Among the new members are former fast bowler Aqib Javed, ex-captain Azhar Ali, and renowned International Cricket Council (ICC) umpire Aleem Dar.

Additionally, Hassan Cheema has been appointed as the committee’s data analyst, while right-handed batter Asad Shafiq retains his position.

Aqib Javed will take a leading role within the committee, overseeing key decision-making processes. Azhar Ali, known for his strong leadership on the field, will focus on youth development, a critical area for Pakistan’s cricket future. Aleem Dar, with his vast experience in international cricket, is expected to bring a sharp analytical edge to the team’s selection strategy.

Cheema’s inclusion as a data analyst signals the PCB’s increasing reliance on analytics to guide player selections and team strategy, aligning with modern trends in the sport.

Muhammad Yousuf resigns

These changes follow the resignation of former selector Muhammad Yousuf two weeks prior. Yousuf, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), cited “personal reasons” for his departure, expressing pride in contributing to Pakistan’s cricket success. However, sources suggest that Yousuf’s resignation stemmed from a disagreement with a member of the coaching staff.

According to insider reports, the dispute arose over the selection of players for the series against England. Yousuf was pushing for the inclusion of emerging talents such as Kamran Ghulam, Zahid Mehmood, and Muhammad Ali, despite their inconsistent performances.

In contrast, the coach preferred maintaining the status quo, stressing the need for policy consistency and caution in making changes to the squad.

This internal tension, coupled with Yousuf’s insistence on giving new players opportunities, ultimately led to his departure from the selection committee.

PCB yet to confirm Captain and Head Coach’s roles

With the revamped selection committee now in place, the PCB is yet to announce the specific roles of the captain, head coach, and the five non-voting members in the selection process.

The national board is expected to provide further details on these positions in the coming week, signaling a new phase for Pakistan cricket as it looks to balance the development of emerging talent with the need for consistent performance.
