LAHORE: Former Pakistani cricketer-turned-umpire Mohammad Nazir Junior on Thursday passed away at the age of 78. His son, Nauman Nazir, confirmed this news.
He played for Pakistan in 14 Test matches and 4 ODIs, taking 34 wickets during his international career. On his Test debut, he became the first Pakistani spinner to claim 7 wickets in an innings.
After retiring from playing, Nazir Junior transitioned to umpiring, officiating 15 ODIs and 5 Test matches in a brief but noteworthy umpiring career.
Born in Lahore, Nazir Junior’s health began to decline after he was severely injured in a traffic accident five years ago. He had been critically ill for the past week and was receiving treatment at a private hospital before his passing.
Apart from his on-field contributions, Nazir Junior was widely respected for his knowledge of the game and his ability to nurture young talent.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed its condolences in a statement, mourning the loss of a respected figure in Pakistan cricket. Nazir Jr’s contributions as a player and umpire will long be remembered in the cricketing community.
