LAHORE: Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Irfan announced his retirement from international cricket on Sunday.

The 42-year-old speedster, who played last for Pakistan in November 2019 against Australia, announced the decision in a formal statement issued on social media platform X.

“I have decided to retire from international cricket,” Irfan said. “I want to express my deepest gratitude to my teammates, coaches, Thank you for the love, the cheers, and the unforgettable memories and I will continue to support and celebrate the game that has given me everything,”

Irfan played four test matches in which he took 10 wickets. He played his last Test match for Pakistan against South Africa in Dubai in October 2013.

He played 60 ODIs and 22 T20Is for Pakistan and took 83 and 16 wickets respectively.

He is the third Pakistani cricketer who announced retirement from international cricket in recent days. Earlier on Saturday, fast bowler Mohammad Amir had bid farewell to international cricket a day after allrounder Imad Wasim announced a re-retirement from international cricket.

Over the years, the seven feet tall pacer has proved to be quite tough even for the best opponents on his day. But injuries brought him down in his career here; mainly in 2015, when he had to cut short his World Cup campaign due to a pelvis stress fracture.

He accumulated a total of 109 wickets among all forms of cricket for Pakistan, one of which came in the shape of a Player of the Match award when he took part in a 2013 ODI against South Africa at Centurion.

An equally memorable debut for Irfan in T20Is would be his participation in a bilateral series between Pakistan and India, which happens very rarely, where he caused the star player Virat Kohli in an impressive spell and an eventual five-wicket victory with two balls remaining.
