The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chair Richard Thompson and CEO Richard Gould have shed light on the critical role the Indian cricket team plays in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, set to be hosted by Pakistan in 2025.
Speaking to British journalists, Thompson emphasized the financial importance of India’s participation, stating, “The Champions Trophy without India would not serve the best interests of cricket.” He pointed to broadcasting rights as a key factor that cricket cannot afford to lose.

While a hybrid venue model is being considered if India declines to travel to Pakistan, the final decision rests with the Indian government. The Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla reiterated that India’s participation will depend on government approval.
“Whatever the government decides, we will abide by it,” Shukla said, noting that security and political tensions between the nations have prevented India from touring Pakistan since 2008.
Thompson and Gould also addressed the potential impact of the Champions Trophy, emphasizing that India’s involvement is crucial for the sport’s financial health. Discussions regarding alternate venues will be held by the ICC if needed.
The 2025 Champions Trophy will feature eight top teams, including India, with matches to be held in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi.
