South African footballer and olympian killed in Johannesburg carjacking

WEB DESK: Kaizer Chiefs, the player’s club, confirmed the tragic death of Luke Fleurs, a 24-year-old defender, in a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.

According to police reports, Fleurs was shot at a petrol station. “Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg,” stated Kaizer Chiefs in a released statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Following the attack, the perpetrators fled with Fleurs’s vehicle. Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo disclosed that authorities are treating the incident as a case of murder and car hijacking.

Before joining Kaizer Chiefs, Fleurs had represented the national under-23s side, participating in the Tokyo Olympics.

Fleurs’s untimely demise adds to the grim statistics of fatal hijackings in South Africa, a nation plagued by high levels of violent crime. Official crime statistics reveal that from October to December last year, a total of 5,973 hijacking cases were reported, reflecting the ongoing challenge of crime prevention in the country.
