The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a public advisory urging citizens to exercise caution while purchasing smartphones, whether brand new or used, to avoid falling victim to potential fraud.

The PTA highlighted the importance of buying smartphones from trusted and reliable sources to ensure consumer safety.

The PTA advised buyers to always opt for box-packed mobile devices and to verify that the phone comes with an official warranty. The advisory highlights the significance of checking for the PTA stamp on the phone’s packaging and ensuring that the International Mobile Equipment Identity number on the box matches the one on the phone.

“Avoid buying expensive devices at suspiciously low prices or without a warranty,” the alert stated, advising citizens to only purchase smartphones with intact seals and warranty from reputable sellers. “Always buy a box-packed mobile device and verify the PTA stamp in front of the shop owner,” it continued.

To further secure the purchase, the PTA encouraged buyers to verify the phone’s IMEI number via its Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). Consumers can do this by visiting the link https://dirbs.pta.gov.pk, texting the IMEI to 8484, or using the DVS app.
