Singapore welcomes first new leader in two decades

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore’s first new prime minister in 20 years, Lawrence Wong, held his initial cabinet meeting on Thursday. He emphasized the need to sustain the success of the wealthy city-state amid an uncertain global environment.

Wong’s Vision for Singapore

After being sworn in on Wednesday night, Wong attended a party and received congratulations from world leaders. He posted on Instagram, stating that the government has “a full agenda ahead.” Wong, 51, took over from Lee Hsien Loong, 72, who now serves as a senior minister in Wong’s cabinet. The transition was protracted and carefully managed to ensure continuity.

Focus on Unity and Progress

In an editorial, The Straits Times highlighted the need for unity in facing global uncertainties. “PM Wong must inspire Singaporeans to believe that we’ve done it before, and we can do it again, together,” the editorial stated. During his inauguration, Wong addressed geopolitical tensions, protectionism, and nationalism, emphasizing that Singapore seeks to be “friends with all while upholding our rights and interests.”

Sustaining Singapore’s Miracle

Wong declared his mission to sustain Singapore’s success, which he referred to as a “miracle.” He highlighted Singapore’s high international standing and commitment to strengthening partnerships with global powers, including the United States and China. “My mission is clear: to continue defying the odds and to sustain this miracle called Singapore,” he said.

Global Congratulations

World leaders extended their congratulations to Wong. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed eagerness to strengthen the U.S.-Singapore strategic partnership. China conveyed confidence in advancing China-Singapore relations under Wong’s leadership. Taiwan’s foreign ministry emphasized the close and friendly ties between Taiwan and Singapore, hoping for continued expansion of cooperative relations. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak affirmed that the UK-Singapore relationship “will continue to thrive in the years to come.”

Strengthening Regional Ties

Malaysia also congratulated Wong. Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed a desire to deepen the partnership with Singapore in areas of mutual interest, including economic development, education, and trade.
