The Sindh government has approved the purchase of 138 luxury vehicles for assistant commissioners across the province, despite earlier pledges to cut government spending.

The vehicles, double-cabin 4×4 models, will cost around Rs2 billion, according to a letter from the services and general administration department to the finance department requesting the release of funds.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah signed off on the purchase before leaving for a week-long trip to the United States. A spokesperson for the Chief Minister’s House said the funds had already been allocated in the provincial budget.

He defended the decision, noting that the last vehicle purchase for assistant commissioners was made 12 years ago, in 2012, and these new vehicles were essential for official duties, especially in rural areas.

Sources also revealed that even more expensive vehicles are planned for procurement for deputy commissioners across the province.
