Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh on this date, her son claims

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to her homeland once the newly established caretaker government decides on an election date, her son has claimed.

This statement contrasts with his earlier remark regarding his mother, the former prime minister and daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Hasina fled to India on Monday following weeks of deadly protests that forced her resignation. A caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday and is responsible for organising elections.

Her son stated, “For now, she (Hasina) remains in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government schedules an election.”

The Awami League, Hasina’s party, is not part of the interim government following a student-led uprising that led to her departure after nationwide violence resulted in about 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Currently, Hasina is sheltered in a safe house near New Delhi. Reports suggest she may seek asylum in Britain, though the British Home Office has not commented.

Moreover, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned a discussion with his British counterpart regarding Bangladesh but provided no specifics.

Joy, Hasina’s son, also indicated his willingness to join politics if necessary, expressing confidence that the Awami League might participate in the upcoming elections and potentially secure a victory.
