Severe heatwave forecast for Islamabad next week

ISLAMABAD: Multiple weather forecasting platforms, including The Weather Channel, have issued warnings of severe heat expected to hit Islamabad starting next week.

Forecasts predict excessive heat beginning Tuesday, May 21, 2024, with temperatures soaring to 41 degrees Celsius. The heat is set to intensify, reaching 42 degrees on Wednesday and peaking at 43 degrees by Saturday, May 25.

Google’s weather search feature has also issued a ‘severe weather alert’ for Islamabad.

In response, the Islamabad District Health Office has instructed all healthcare facilities to establish Emergency Heat Wave Response Centres. These centres will operate seven days a week throughout the heatwave duration.

A memorandum from the District Health Officer highlights the increased risks during the peak heat months of May to July, exacerbated by global warming and climate change. The memo warns of a potential rise in heatstroke-related mortality and morbidity, emphasizing the need for immediate preventive measures.

Heatstroke, the most severe heat-related illness, occurs when the body’s temperature regulation fails, causing body temperature to spike from 103 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit within minutes, potentially leading to fatal outcomes without prompt emergency treatment.

As Islamabad braces for the impending heatwave, authorities and citizens are urged to exercise caution, stay hydrated, and take necessary precautions to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.
