ISLAMABAD: Sessions of both houses of Pakistan’s bicameral parliament will meet today separately, during which several bills, including amendments to the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act and the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1999, will be tabled for approval.

The National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, will meet at 4 PM, while the Senate session will be held at 6 PM.

Yesterday, the National Assembly Secretariat released a seven-point agenda for the session, which includes the presentation of The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance 2024 and two call attention notices.

Following the approval of the 26th constitutional amendment, the federal government has decided to amend the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act.

The Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance 2024 was presented in the upper house on November 1.

Acting Chairman Syedaal Khan then referred the bill to relevant standing committee for consideration. The bill was tabled in the Senate by Federal Law Minister Nazir Tarar.

The ordinance includes a sub-clause added to Section 2 of the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Act, under which the committee would consist of the Senior Puisne Judge, along with the Chief Justice of Pakistan and one judge nominated by the Chief Justice.

Another bill regarding increasing the number of Supreme Court judges from 17 to 25 has also been tabled in the Senate.

The bill was then referred to the Senate Standing Committee on Justice, the panel chaired by Senator Farooq H Naek of the Pakistan Peoples Party. The committee had approved the bill on the same day.

Members of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) are expected to present the amendment bill during Private Member’s Day.

According to media reports, members of the ruling coalition- Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), PML-N, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P)- have been instructed to ensure their participation in both houses during sessions.
